Dimple Kapadia: “Being a celebrity is like taking an exam every second of the day. You’re judged 24/7”

In an era where teenagers uninhibitedly curate their lives on ‘finstas’—secret Instagram accounts where they share unfiltered moments with a small circle of close friends and shitpost away to glory—it’s easy to think of social media as the exclusive domain of the young. Finstas, in particular, are a casual, often humorous approach to social media for Gen Z; the antidote to how ‘curated’ Instagram feeds have become. One of the last people you might expect to have one is 67-year-old Dimple Kapadia, who is famously reclusive and prefers to remain in the confines of her art-filled home. However, after 51 years in the public eye, Kapadia finds it unnecessary to participate in the social media rat race like the rest of us do. “But of course I scroll through Instagram,” she revealed during her cover interview with Vogue India, acknowledging that she is a lurker and enjoys observing but has never felt the need to post anything herself. Would she ever consider following in the footsteps of her peers Zeenat Aman and Jackie Shroff, who have taken to Instagram like fish to water? “What for? Give me one good reason,” she challenged. Just the fact that she has been acting for so long, yet people know very little of what she actually is like. “But do I want to say anything about myself?” she rhetorically shot back, further indicating her reluctance to put herself out there for the world to judge. Well, would she consider posting her artwork at least? “Oh, I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready,” she responded, weighing the suggestion. “It took me years to put up my art in my own house.”While her peers may embrace social media for its connectivity, Kapadia finds solace in a different digital realm: mobile gaming. “I love playing games on my phone,” she shared, naming Empires & Puzzles: Dragon Dawn, a fantasy game that allows players to duel make-believe opponents, as her top choice. These imaginary battles give the actor a brief respite from her busy work schedule, presenting her a private moment related to something outside the film industry. “I’m quite happy,” she stated, disclosing that she enjoys nothing more than shuffling artefacts around in her Juhu apartment. “My love is my home.”
