In her debut film Bobby (1973), Dimple Kapadia burst onto the scene wearing a polka-dotted wrap top and a button-down black skirt. And just like that, she became an overnight sensation. Over the years, her filmography has embraced a parade of intriguing characters, with each new role unveiling a wardrobe that’s just as captivating as the persona she portrayed—from the island girl in Saagar (1985) to the sophisticated older woman in Dil Chahta Hai (2001) and most recently, the quintessential affluent South Delhi aunty in Murder Mubarak (2024).“My entire wardrobe for my films was always done by my sister, Simple” Kapadia told Vogue India in her cover story. She went on to explain that Simple, for as long as she was her dress designer, ensured every scene had three outfit alternatives, a set-up Kapadia admits might seem “spoiled” because it made it challenging for her to work with others later in her career. “Others don’t do that for me. I don’t feel confident.”Perhaps it’s a universal sister thing. There’s nothing quite like each other’s validation, especially when it comes to wardrobe choices. Eventually, though, all that second-guessing turns into a habit of indecision, she reveals. “So, in every aspect, whether it’s the colour or the hair, it’s honestly a bit of a nightmare.” Kapadia laughs. “Abu [Jani] and Sandeep [Khosla] even tease me, saying, ‘Don’t ask your dog if this is nice or not.’ But that’s me. I’ll ask ten people, and in the end, I might still pick the wrong thing.”Instagram contentThis content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.
